RESEARCH EXPERIENCE
Jewish Immigrants to Florida (1993 to 2018)
Completed 10 oral histories in Buenos Aires and La Plata, Argentina to understand the life experiences of the Gaíl and Farber families (1880 to 1984). Gathered letters, photographs, and documents to research the migration, education, persecutions, and motivations of Jewish emigres from Bielsk, Poland and Odessa, Russia, some of whom immigrated to Florida via Latin America. Worked with Rebecca Jefferson, PhD, on selected diaries and created a collection of materials related to the Gaíl and Farber families for the University of Florida Price Library of Judaica to understand Jewish immigration to Florida. Created the performance piece Composing a Heart…and Other Jewish Immigrant Stories to share this research with public audiences.
Bilingual Education in Florida (2007-2008 and 2018-2022)
Researched the Florida-based Coral Way Elementary School bilingual program, founded in 1963 as the first publicly-funded bilingual school in the US, and created the first archive and digital collection of 250 items dating from 1960 to 2021.
Conducted oral histories in 2008 with Richard Ruiz, PhD (14, in Miami), and again in 2018 to 2019 with Maria Coady, PhD (9, in Miami), which resulted in the publication of the first book about the history of the program that shaped education across the country: The Coral Way Bilingual Program (by Maria Coady, Multilingual Matters, 2020).
